Facing Champlain 3D (Clip 1)

For Facing Champlain: A Work in 3 Dimensions, the NFB brought together some of Canada's brightest talents, led by writer and director Jean-François Pouliot. This formidable creative team took the framework of 3-D stereoscopic film in totally new directions, reinventing the grammar of cinema.

Artist Mélissa Hébert, the fictional descendant of Champlain, attempts to paint a portrait of the famous explorer in an attempt to grasp the essence of the man. In the process, reality steps aside as the the artist passes through a tear in the canvas into the explorer's immense world. This clip provides a 3D recounting of Samuel's true passion.

“Loved this film when I saw it at Place Royale in Quebec City. Too bad the NFB cannot, or will not, bring it to Port Royal where Champlain came before Quebec City.”
